In New York state, funeral homes are not permitted to own crematories (or cemeteries,) and cemeteries are not permitted to own funeral homes. Consequently, if you must arrange a cremation service, you WILL HAVE TO ENGAGE THE SERVICES OF A NEW YORK STATE LICENSED FUNERAL HOME. The funeral establishment you choose will transfer the body from the place of death to their establishment, make the necessary arrangements with you, notify the medical examiner, prepare the required documents and file the related permits with the health department, prepare an obituary if you wish to publish one, secure certified copies of the death certificate, and transport the body (in either an alternative container or casket) to a crematory you select. In New York, human remains are NOT cremated at funeral homes; rather, they are cremated in a cremation chamber at a registered crematory.
